What the Hour Is Worth

About this site

Fifty notes on the chain between a punch and a payment, written for the people who have to make it come out right: payroll, HR and people teams, operations and shift managers, and whoever owns the time system and has never been asked what its settings do.

What it covers

Which minutes count as work. How time is captured and what happens to it before it reaches payroll. What an hour is actually worth once everything earned for working is in the rate. When a premium starts and what it multiplies. What the statement has to explain. How to find an underpayment, compute it and correct it. And what records make any of it provable.

What it leaves out

What the law requires in any particular place. Those answers differ by jurisdiction, by sector and by agreement, they change, and they are a question for somebody qualified where you are. This collection is about arriving at that person with the right question, the right week and the right arithmetic.

About the figures

Every number on this site is an illustration of what one employer recorded or computed for itself, and is labelled as such. None of them is a benchmark, a survey result or a statement of what any rule requires.
